How does Lennox warranty coverage work in California?

Lennox's registration page says outside California, Florida, Georgia (for units installed on or after January 1, 2026), Quebec, and other places that prohibit registration requirements, you must register within 60 calendar days of installation to get the extended warranty. In California, eligible equipment automatically gets the default parts-only extended warranty.

You can switch to the parts-and-labor option within the same 60 days at WarrantyYourWay.com or by calling 1-800-9-LENNOX. On Merit and Elite series equipment, the default is a 5-year parts-only extension (10 years of parts total), and the alternative is 3 years of labor and 2 years of parts (3 years labor and 7 years parts total). On the Dave Lennox Signature Collection, the default is a 2-year parts-only extension (12 years of parts total), and the alternative is 3 years of labor (10 years of parts and 3 of labor). Other terms and exclusions apply.

What does Lennox say causes an outdoor unit to fail?

Lennox's outdoor unit page lists a tripped breaker or blown fuse, a faulty thermostat, capacitor failure, fan motor failure, compressor problems, low refrigerant, and indoor-side causes such as a frozen coil or a tripped float switch. It says a buzzing or humming outdoor unit can signal a failed capacitor, and that aging capacitors, worn fan motors, suspected compressor trouble, and refrigerant leaks need a professional.

Lennox's page on warm air adds that low refrigerant is not something you can refill like windshield washer fluid; a technician must find and repair the leak first. It says to reset an HVAC breaker only once, and to call a technician if it trips again.

What refrigerant do Lennox systems use?

Lennox says it uses R-454B for whole-home ducted systems and R-32 for ductless mini splits, and replacement systems are 2025-compliant. Its homeowner guide says existing R-410A systems can keep being serviced and recharged with R-410A for the foreseeable future, but R-410A is being phased out and will become less available and more expensive. R-410A systems are not cross-compatible with the new refrigerants.

Lennox says new systems include leak detection. If a leak is detected, the indoor blower may run while the thermostat is off, and if you notice that, have a certified technician check the system. Lennox recommends a certified technician for any repair or recharge.

How much does Lennox AC repair cost?

National 2026 guides put most AC repairs at $150 to $650. A capacitor runs $80 to $400 and a condenser fan motor $300 to $800 (This Old House). Fixr lists a typical AC repair average of $375 and a $75 minimum service fee. These are not Sacramento quotes. Ask for the part, labor, and refrigerant costs listed separately, and ask the contractor to look up your serial number to check warranty coverage first.

Do Lennox mini splits repair differently?

Lennox's mini split page lists power problems, remote or setpoint settings, capacitor failure, control board problems, refrigerant pressure faults, overload protection, and compressor failure as reasons the compressor will not start. Lennox says to turn off power at the breaker for at least 30 minutes to reset an overload protector, test once, and call a professional if it will not hold.

How do you check a contractor for Lennox repair?

Check the license first. Look up the contractor's CSLB number, confirm an active C-20 license, and ask about an EPA Section 608 credential for refrigerant work. Ask for a written estimate listing parts and warranty terms. Ask what the contractor will do about the leak if refrigerant is low, not just add more.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my Lennox in California?
No. Lennox says in California eligible equipment automatically gets the default parts-only extended warranty. To switch to the parts-and-labor option, you have 60 days from installation, through WarrantyYourWay.com or 1-800-9-LENNOX.
What refrigerant does a new Lennox use?
Lennox says R-454B for whole-home ducted systems and R-32 for ductless mini splits. Both are lower global warming potential refrigerants. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced.
Can I retrofit my old Lennox AC to R-454B?
No. Lennox says R-410A systems are not cross-compatible with the new refrigerants. Repairs and recharges use the refrigerant already in the system, and Lennox recommends a certified technician for them.
Why is my Lennox outdoor unit humming but not starting?
Lennox says a buzzing or humming outdoor unit can signal a failed capacitor. Turn the system off and call (916) 712-7030 to talk with a local AC repair technician. Capacitors hold a charge, so do not open the cabinet yourself.
Why did my Lennox blower start with the thermostat off?
Lennox says new systems have leak detection, and if a leak is detected the indoor blower may run while the thermostat is off. If you notice this, have a certified technician check the system for a refrigerant leak.
