How does Goodman's warranty work in California?
Goodman's warranty page says to register online within 60 days of installation to get the enhanced coverage. An unregistered air conditioner has a 5-year parts limited warranty, and a registered one has a 10-year parts limited warranty. Select models, if registered, may also carry a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty and a lifetime compressor limited warranty for the original registered owner for as long as they own the home.
Goodman's page says residents of California, Florida, Georgia, and Quebec do not need to register the product to receive all the rights and remedies of registered owners. It also says registered coverage lasts as long as the original registered owner or their spouse owns and lives in the home, up to 10 years. The homeowner or the installing dealer can register the unit, so ask the contractor who will do it. Goodman's page does not cover heat pumps separately.
What commonly fails on a Goodman air conditioner?
Goodman's learning center names low or leaking refrigerant, dead thermostat batteries, worn capacitors or fan controls, clogged condensate drains, dirty filters, and leaky or clogged ductwork as common reasons an AC is not cooling. It says if the unit is not operating, the compressor, fan controls, or capacitor could be worn out.
Goodman says a technician should find and repair a refrigerant leak instead of simply topping off the system, and that individuals cannot buy refrigerants without an EPA Section 608 credential. It also says bent coil fins reduce airflow and that a clogged filter can raise an AC's energy use by up to 15%.
What refrigerant does Goodman use?
Goodman is a brand of Daikin Comfort Technologies North America. Daikin's June 2025 R-32 flyer says its Daikin, Amana, and Goodman brands switched residential heat pump match-ups from R-410A to R-32. The flyer, which is a marketing comparison, says R-454B is a blend of 68.9% R-32 and 31.1% R-1234yf and cannot be topped off and recharged as easily as R-32, and gives a May 28, 2025 price comparison for 20-pound cylinders of $449 for R-32 versus $2,799 for R-454B.
Prices change and these are the manufacturer's numbers, so treat them as a reason to ask about refrigerant cost in your estimate, not as a quote. Check your unit's nameplate to see whether it uses R-410A or R-32. Older systems on R-410A can still be serviced, but the two refrigerants are not interchangeable.
How much does Goodman AC repair cost?
National 2026 guides put most AC repairs at $150 to $650, a capacitor at $80 to $400, and a refrigerant leak repair plus recharge at $200 to $1,500 or more (This Old House and Fixr). Refrigerant cost depends on which type your unit uses. These are not Sacramento quotes, so get an itemized written estimate and ask whether a part is covered by the warranty.
What should you check before calling for Goodman AC repair?
Goodman's guidance includes confirming the thermostat is set correctly, checking the electrical panel for tripped breakers, looking for blockages at the outdoor unit and indoor vents, and checking the filter. Goodman says filters are typically replaced about every 90 days depending on location and use, and recommends professional AC maintenance before the cooling season. Anything involving refrigerant, capacitors, or the compressor should go to a technician.
How do you vet a contractor who works on Goodman equipment?
Look up the contractor's license number on the CSLB website and confirm an active C-20 license. Ask for a written estimate with part numbers, labor, and warranty terms, and ask who will register or verify your warranty. CSLB says a down payment generally cannot exceed 10% of the contract or $1,000, whichever is less.
